What enterprise really wants from workplace learning

Vanguard's Luis Rojas on slowing down, telling the story with one number and getting AI past first gear

Luis Rojas
Principal, Head of HR Strategy and Operations, Vanguard
TL;DR
  • Slow down so you can go faster. Before solving a learning request, ask what the problem is and what data proves it.
  • One number beats a spreadsheet. An onboarding programme won the business over once it was framed as 19 million in collections in its first 100 days.
  • Usage isn't adoption. Knowing people use AI tells you they're driving the Ferrari, not whether they're stuck in first gear in a car park.
  • Start with the business and the process, not the AI strategy.
  • No single metric. Balance them so one doesn't create unintended consequences. Hours saved is the one Vanguard is watching.
  • Vendors who do their homework on the company and the person get a different conversation.

On 19 August we hosted The Corporate Learning Table, now IN ON HR, a digital roundtable with Luis Rojas, who leads HR strategy and operations at Vanguard. Luis started out rotating through the business, as a product manager and in operations, finance and technology, then chose HR when he was offered any role he wanted. He has since been an HR chief operating officer, led learning as a centre of excellence, and run people-strategy transformations for incoming CHROs.

The room was made up of learning-tech founders, HR tech and assessment leaders, an occupational psychologist and an AI transformation director. The question on the table was what enterprise really wants from workplace learning, and what vendors get wrong.
